Mercenary
by Dr. Joaquín Andrade, Lic. Florencia Navatta
In the last ten years, surveys from different countries suggest, that the proportion of people dissatisfied with their work is, worldwide, very high, around 50%.
This book intends to be a useful guide to face a phenomenon, that perhaps, has no precedent in current history: the abrupt, unpredictable and violent changes in our habits, aspirations, future expectations and uncertainty and fears, generated by the post-digital era added to the viral pandemic, about how we will function and work in the future to come.
If we had, from an early age, a clear awareness of the transience of life, we would take a clear attitude of:
- Be clear about our sense of purpose.
- Live each moment in the here and now, according to it.
- Prepare ourselves to face new working conditions with new skills and abilities.
- Enjoy each moment, without compromising the moments that will follow.
- Work to live...live to work...or enjoy every day, hour and minute of what I do?
Undoubtedly, to live fully, we will need to adapt to new conditions and circumstances in all fields.
The noun "mercenary" in the title, does not imply in any way, a disdainful consideration for those workers that, in most cases, have been forced by personal and social circumstances, often tragic, to survive through a particular work activity.
Nor do we refer to those people who, without training and without employability skills, in today's world of growing and changing technological demands, have to perform any task to be able to meet their basic needs.
We refer instead, to those individuals who perform a certain job role because it "pays well"... (“but... do you like what you do?...no...I hate it...but I earn more than in other jobs...").
And to those others who feel trapped in their work....
We use the euphemism "labor prostitute", to refer to labor mercenaries, who "suffer" their job for eight, and sometimes more hours a day, for decades, performing an activity they hate, or at least are indifferent to, or do not enjoy....
