
Smart Superfoods

This book is addressed to all people who are clearly aware of the importance of the food they eat, for their health, optimal physical and mental performance, healthy longevity and disease prevention.
And who, despite the force of habits and their cultural, family, regional, etc. conditioning, have the rational criteria to become aware of which foods to eat, and which ones to avoid or reduce, for the optimal functioning of their body and mind and the avoidance or reduction of diseases.
In the last decade, an avalanche of scientific research has demonstrated, with the highest levels of evidence, that there are some foods that are directly harmful to health (e.g., sausages, processed meats, chip potatoes, etc.), and others that offer exceptional advantages (e.g., cruciferous vegetables, broccoli, blueberries, etc.) to prevent diseases, avoid obesity, achieve optimal physical and mental performance and healthy longevity.
The latter, have been colloquially called "superfoods" to distinguish them from directly harmful foods, that are hypercaloric and full of harmful substances (e.g., sausages, chips, etc.), and from the so-called "neutral", empty of nutrients but generally rich in calories (snacks, desserts, flour, etc.), which also "occupy" the place of the beneficial ones.
Superfoods should be distinguished from foods that contain numerous nutritional components and antioxidants, in significant quantities, which have been called "nutrient-dense foods" (powerhouse foods).
In some cases, both categories are get one over the other.
Superfoods should also be distinguished from those that perform different functions depending on the circumstances, or support brain function and cognition (so-called "smart" foods), and from so-called "functional" foods, that contain biologically active ingredients, to fulfill a specific health-related function, or that are industrially modified to fulfill a specific function (e.g., juices to which calcium is added, skim milk from which fat is
