The art of Choosing

by Dr. Joaquín Andrade, Lic. Florencia Navatta

Choosing who to vote for a presidential office is a decision. Decisions are preceded by a process called "decision making".
Reader friend, we invite you to reflect....
How do you arrive at the most important decisions in your life?
About your health...your family's health...your children's education...your family's security and harmony...your socio-cultural progress...your economy...?
What personal strategy do you use to make a decision, that has the highest probability of arriving at a positive solution, choosing the best option among all proposals?
When it comes to choose national authorities among several candidates, it is frequent, as mentioned above, that "internal" distorting factors, such as passion, overflowing emotions, the need to belong, ideological fanaticism, cultural and family tradition, sympathy, feelings, habit, fear, and cognitive biases (see below), all cloud rational decision making.
In order to try to vote by reason and not by passion, the two most relevant questions to ask ourselves as voters are:
-Does a given candidate have the necessary conditions (which we will analyze in the text) to face the requirements of the position, in the conditions of this interconnected, digitalized, globalized, diverse and unpredictable world in which we live?
and,
-Can I read "between the lines", with the least possible passion and conditioning, the multiple messages that the political marketing, campaign and image candidates’ consultants send us, frequently disguising all kinds of defects, weaknesses, negative attitudes and inauthentic expressions, of doubtful and even scarce honesty, and candidates’ omissions and exaggerations, that is, trying to position the "post-truth"?
There are many books in several languages, which are dedicated to teach image consultants and political marketing specialists, the strategies and tactics necessary to
generate in electors a positive image of a candidate, not always adjusted to the truth, that motivates voters’ preference.
